What your Mac already does for free
Apple documents layers that check downloaded apps, block known malicious software and remediate supported malware. Gatekeeper and notarization help assess downloaded software; XProtect receives malware information independently of a full macOS upgrade. These protections are already part of macOS, rather than a trial that expires.
Keep supported macOS and app updates enabled, use trustworthy download sources and take unexpected requests for passwords or Terminal commands seriously. No scanner can make every social-engineering request safe or recover an account after you hand over its credentials.
Our Mac malware and antivirus guide explains the baseline in more depth. Paying for another product can be reasonable, but an ordinary slow Mac or an alarming website banner does not establish an infection.
When paying can make sense
Consider a paid product if you want its documented continuous protection, need a supported response to a recurring threat, or must meet work requirements. A family managing several devices may value one subscription’s coverage. A one-time suspicious download may instead call for a focused scan and investigation.
On a company Mac, use the security product approved by IT. Installing another overlapping real-time tool can complicate troubleshooting and policy. Do not remove the organization’s agent or lower macOS security to install a product from this list.
This page compares documented fit, not measured detection quality. We did not install these products, submit malware, time scans or measure battery overhead. Vendor awards and percentages are not presented as our test results, and there is no universal “best detection” winner here.
Options by job
| Option | Documented fit | Main check before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| macOS protections | Built-in security baseline with no separate purchase. | Keep software current and investigate symptoms; this is not a user-selected on-demand scanner interface. |
| Malwarebytes | Free cleanup mode or paid ongoing threat protection. | Current 5.28 drops macOS 11 despite an older requirements list. |
| Bitdefender Antivirus for Mac | Real-time malware, browsing and protected-file features. | Match the direct Mac product, current OS support and final subscription quote. |
| Intego ONE | Current antivirus and firewall package, with additional tools in higher plans. | Do not apply old X9 release numbers and requirements to ONE. |
These are different scopes. A firewall, VPN, cleanup tool and antivirus are not interchangeable simply because a bundle includes several of them. Select the protection you need before paying for a larger bundle.
Where Malwarebytes is stronger: free cleanup and paid protection
Malwarebytes explicitly distinguishes Free cleanup of an already affected device from Premium Security’s ongoing automatic protection. That gives you a choice between a focused cleanup use and a paid continuous layer. Do not assume downloading the free app means every paid protection remains active indefinitely.
The live Mac product page quoted US$59.99 per year for Standard covering three devices. Plus was US$79.98 per year for three devices and adds VPN coverage. The page says features vary by operating system; Windows, mobile and Mac feature lists should not be treated as identical.
Version and support: 5.28, released 5 October 2026. Those release notes drop macOS Big Sur 11 from app updates, while protection-database updates continue for existing users there. The September requirements page still lists 11 alongside 12–27; for the current app release, treat macOS 12 or later as the minimum. The checked requirements page does not separately enumerate Intel and Apple silicon hardware.
Watch out for: the product-page price and a multi-device plan are not a promise that every optional identity or VPN feature is included. Confirm the final term, renewal quote and device coverage at checkout. The latest release’s limited free VPN rollout is distinct from a paid unlimited VPN plan.
Where Bitdefender is stronger: a defined Mac protection package
Bitdefender’s direct Antivirus for Mac documents real-time protection, adware removal, browsing protection, Safe Files and Time Machine protection. Those are relevant functions if you want a paid security layer with explicit file and backup safeguards, rather than a storage cleaner marketed as general protection.
Its support page lists 10.3.6.18, released 13 October 2026, with gradual rollout. The compatibility page explicitly supports released macOS 27 and native Apple silicon, including M1 and newer M-series chips. It excludes beta operating systems.
Requirements need care: the current product page says macOS 11.3 or later and 1 GB free space, while a separate support page still says 10.10. Use the stricter current product requirement and ask the vendor about an older system. Do not assume a low minimum on an old help page establishes current coverage.
Price: the checked live price widget did not resolve a complete quote, so we do not invent a current purchase or renewal price. It offers subscription terms and a 30-day full trial without a credit card. Confirm the currency, number of Macs, first term and higher renewal amount before purchasing.
Watch out for: the direct Antivirus for Mac and App Store Virus Scanner Plus are different editions. Bitdefender’s support material describes remaining Intel components in Virus Scanner Plus separately; do not transfer that qualification to the native direct product, or assume its capabilities are identical.
Where Intego is stronger: antivirus and a two-way firewall
The current offer we reached redirected to Intego ONE. Essential combines antivirus with a firewall that monitors network connections. Advanced adds SmartClean, and Complete adds VPN functions. The bundle distinction matters if network control is a main reason to pay.
The live offer displayed $56.24 for the first two years for one Mac on Essential, renewing at $74.99 every two years. These are the dollar amounts displayed by that offer, without conversion; confirm the currency and local tax in the final quote. The monthly equivalent is not a month-to-month billing option.
Requirements: the ONE page lists macOS 12.4 or later, Intel or Apple silicon, at least 8 GB memory and 2 GB available storage. Its current app version and release date were not stated on the checked page, so they remain unverified here.
Watch out for: legacy X9 documentation still lists VirusBarrier 10.9.99 from September 2025. That is a different product record, not evidence that today’s ONE installer has that version. Confirm your licensed product and current release support with Intego before switching from X9.
Before installing or switching protection
- Identify the exact edition. Match the vendor, download source, Mac version and plan. A Windows review is not evidence about the Mac product.
- Check the current OS and chip. Confirm the support statement for your macOS release, including whether betas are excluded.
- Review permissions. Security apps may need documented system extensions or Full Disk Access. Grant them only to the intended official product.
- Keep a backup and the removal route. Use the vendor’s uninstaller for a security tool with background components; do not delete random Library files.
- Review renewal and cancellation. Check the billed total and coverage, not just the largest discount or monthly equivalent.
If you already have an installed product to replace, the antivirus removal guide links vendor-specific procedures. If you suspect an active compromise, the malware removal guide covers the investigation before an ordinary shopping decision.
Where Tend fits
Tend is not antivirus and does not detect, quarantine or remove malware. Its free Security check reports the state of FileVault, firewall, Gatekeeper, System Integrity Protection and the installed XProtect version. A green status is not a certificate that the Mac has no malicious files.
Free app CPU, memory and estimated watts can help investigate resource use, but high use is not malware attribution. Pro’s cleanup, history and sensor features do not turn it into a security scanner. Choose a documented security product when that is the job you need.
Questions
Do I need to pay for antivirus on a Mac?
Not automatically. macOS has built-in protection. Consider an additional product for its documented ongoing protection, support or organizational requirement, after checking the exact Mac edition.
Is a free Mac antivirus enough?
The built-in protections are free. A third-party free cleanup mode may be useful for a focused check, but it can differ from that product’s paid ongoing protection. Compare the actual mode and requirement.
Which antivirus had the best detection in your tests?
We did not run detection tests for this page and do not assign a winner. This comparison uses current vendor documentation, including visible compatibility and price limitations.
