How to clear your browsing history on a Mac

To clear browsing history on a Mac, open Safari and choose History › Clear History, choose a time range, then confirm. Safari history can also disappear from your other Apple devices through iCloud; Chrome, Firefox and search-engine account history have their own controls.

Clear history on a Mac: choose the right record

“History” can mean several things. Browser history is the list of pages you visited. Search history may also be stored with a search engine account. A downloads list records what you downloaded, while the files themselves remain in Downloads. Finder’s Recents and the Apple menu’s Recent Items are separate again.

Decide which record you want to remove before clicking a button that clears everything. If you only want to fix a page that loads incorrectly, try reloading it first. Clearing history is not a general Mac speedup, and removing cookies or cached content is a different task covered in the cache and cookies guide.

History deletion has no ordinary Undo button. Save a bookmark or copy the address of anything you want to revisit first. If a browser syncs history, read its confirmation carefully: the change may reach your other devices.

Safari: use History and choose a time range

  1. Open Safari, so its menus appear at the top of the screen.
  2. Choose History › Clear History.
  3. Choose how far back to clear: the last hour, today, today and yesterday, or all history.
  4. Confirm with Clear History.

This is Safari’s documented route; it applies to the Safari versions used with macOS 15 Sequoia, macOS 26 Tahoe and macOS 27. Safari updates independently of the major macOS name, so read the dialog in your installed version. Apple’s Safari guide explains the effect.

If Safari is enabled in iCloud on your devices, Apple says the deletion also removes history there. Clearing the Mac’s list is therefore a poor way to keep a page on your iPhone while removing it here. Apple also notes that this clears related browser records, including recent searches and the downloads list, but leaves downloaded files in place.

For a smaller change, open History › Show All History, locate the visit and delete the selected entry. Recheck the list afterwards. Removing an entry does not remove a bookmark or a copy of the page that you deliberately saved.

Chrome: inspect the selected data categories

  1. Open Chrome’s three-dot menu and choose Delete browsing data.
  2. Select the time range you intend to remove.
  3. Select Browsing history. Review any other selected boxes before proceeding.
  4. Choose Delete data.

History, cookies and cached images are separate choices. You do not need to remove all of them to clear a list of visited sites. Google says that deleting history saved to your Google Account can remove it from other signed-in devices as well. Check the profile shown in Chrome so that you are changing the intended account.

For individual entries, use Chrome’s History view and select the visits to remove. Google’s history instructions cover entry-by-entry removal. If suggestions remain, they may be bookmarks, open tabs or search suggestions rather than surviving browsing history.

Firefox: clear recent history

  1. Open Firefox’s application menu, choose History › Clear Recent History.
  2. Set the range under When. The available choices include recent hours, the current day and everything.
  3. Review each data category. Select history and any form or search records you want removed; leave other categories alone unless you want their effects too.
  4. Click Clear.

Mozilla documents the current dialog and its category names. Firefox also offers a stronger per-site action called Forget About This Site, which removes more than a history entry. Read its confirmation before using it, especially if the site has saved settings or sign-in data you need.

A browser’s app version matters more here than the macOS version. If your Firefox menu uses slightly different wording, use its History menu and consult the linked current instructions rather than deleting its profile folder.

Delete search history stored in your account

Clearing Safari or Chrome is not the same as clearing Google Search activity. When activity is saved to a Google Account, use Google My Activity. Check the account, filter by date and product if you only want Search, then review the entries before deleting. Google’s account instructions explain both individual deletion and automatic retention controls.

Other search engines and websites have their own account controls. A browser cannot delete records a website keeps independently. A search appearing again can also be a live suggestion returned by the search service, not evidence that your local clearing failed.

What clearing history leaves behind

Your documents, installed extensions, bookmarks and downloaded files are not erased simply because a history list is cleared. Depending on the browser and the boxes you select, cookies and saved form data may remain too. A shared or managed network may keep its own records outside the Mac. Local history clearing is not a way to remove those records or make past activity unobservable.

For future sessions, a private browsing window limits what the browser retains locally after the session closes. It still does not hide your activity from sites you sign in to, or promise anonymity to a network operator. For a Mac you are selling, use Erase All Content and Settings after backing up, rather than trying to clear each app’s history manually.

How Tend helps

Tend’s Privacy page can clear browser history, cookies, caches and saved form entries with Pro. Review the categories and quit the browser before confirming. Safari data needs Full Disk Access; the permissions guide explains why. The free app does not perform those clearing actions.

This handles supported local browser data. It does not erase a website’s independent records or replace a search account’s activity controls. Use the browser’s own dialog when choosing a particular time range is the main requirement.

Questions

How do I clear Safari history on a Mac?

In Safari, choose History › Clear History, choose the time range and confirm. If Safari is enabled in iCloud, the history removal can also affect your other Apple devices.

Does clearing history delete downloaded files?

No. Removing a browser’s downloads list removes the record of the download. The downloaded files stay on your Mac until you remove them separately.

Why is my search history still there?

It may be saved in your search engine account, or the text may be a live suggestion. Review the account’s activity controls separately from the browser’s local history.

Will clearing history make my Mac faster?

It is mainly a privacy action. It does not fix a heavy app, low disk space or a slow connection. Diagnose those problems separately.
