M5 vs M4 MacBook: battery, power and heat compared

M5 does not bring a universal battery-life increase over M4. Apple gives both generations of MacBook Air the same 18-hour video and 15-hour web ratings, and the base 14-inch Pro keeps 24 and 16 hours. Some Max models improve; none of these figures proves that M5 runs cooler during your work.

Compare the same size and chip tier

“M5 vs M4” can mean two Airs, two base Pro laptops, or very different Pro and Max configurations. Start with the exact chip, screen size, memory and storage. Check Apple menu › About This Mac on an existing Mac, then compare Apple's model specifications.

This is a specification comparison checked on 23 October 2026, using current M5 pages and archived M4 specifications and environmental reports. We have not run these generations side by side, measured their surface temperatures or produced new benchmark scores.

Apple currently lists M5 Air in 13- and 15-inch sizes, and MacBook Pro with M5, M5 Pro or M5 Max depending on size. The base M5 Pro laptop name needs care: a MacBook Pro with M5 is different from one with an M5 Pro chip.

Battery ratings: where M5 changes the claim

Apple's advertised maximums, checked 23 October 2026. Each pair is video streaming / wireless web.
Matching family M4 generation M5 generation
13- or 15-inch Air 18 h / 15 h 18 h / 15 h
14-inch Pro, base chip 24 h / 16 h 24 h / 16 h
14-inch Pro, Pro chip 22 h / 14 h 22 h / 14 h
14-inch Pro, Max chip 18 h / 13 h 20 h / 13 h
16-inch Pro, Pro chip 24 h / 17 h 24 h / 17 h
16-inch Pro, Max chip 21 h / 14 h 22 h / 16 h

The unchanged Air headline is useful: buying an M5 Air solely for a larger advertised number of battery hours doesn't achieve that goal. Conversely, the Max changes are model-specific; don't turn an improved video rating into the same gain for compiling or a video call.

Apple's tests control the workload and brightness. An older M4 with worn battery capacity also isn't equivalent to a new M4 under Apple's test conditions. Our MacBook Pro battery-life guide owns the detailed capacity tables and runtime calculation; the Air guide covers that family.

Apple's idle power figures

Apple's Product Environmental Reports include power measured at the wall with the battery fully charged. These are the 115 V, display-on idle results, with display brightness set by the ENERGY STAR test method and Wi-Fi connected:

Model M4 M5
13-inch Air 3.62 W 3.69 W
15-inch Air 4.35 W 4.11 W
14-inch Pro, base chip 3.91 W 3.79 W

These are Apple's individual product tests, not our controlled comparison. They include the power adapter's losses and aren't direct readings of CPU power. Small differences at idle don't establish a generation-wide winner under load.

In particular, a Mac drawing 3.79 W while idle can draw much more during an export. The power-use guide explains the difference between idle, battery-derived estimates and a working session. Don't multiply an idle reading into a promise about an entire day.

Heat and cooling: what the figures can't settle

Apple describes both M4 and M5 Air as fanless. That removes fan noise as a comparison point; it doesn't mean either laptop produces no heat. A Pro has active cooling, so an Air-to-Pro comparison changes the cooling design as well as the processor.

Actual temperature depends on workload, room conditions, surface, brightness and power settings. A faster chip might finish a task sooner, use more power while it runs, or behave differently over a long task. Battery-hour and idle-power specifications don't resolve that trade-off.

Apple's Power Modes page also matters for supported Pro models: High Power Mode permits higher fan speeds and may help sustained demanding work. Comparing one laptop in High Power Mode with another in Low Power Mode would mix configuration with generation.

We have no matched M4/M5 thermal measurements to rank them. For a Mac you already own, follow the heat investigation before treating warmth as a reason to replace the computer. A busy app can remain busy on either generation.

The Air's other configuration changes

Apple's current M5 Air specification starts storage at 512 GB and offers up to 4 TB, while the M4 model's archived specification starts at 256 GB and offers up to 2 TB. Both list 16, 24 or 32 GB of unified memory.

The published memory bandwidth changes from 120 GB/s on M4 Air to 153 GB/s on M5 Air. Bandwidth is a transfer-rate specification, not additional memory capacity or a measured speedup for every application. The unified-memory guide explains that distinction.

Current US M5 Air specs list Apple's 40W Dynamic adapter with 60W Max; M4 configurations originally listed 30W or 35W options. Fast-charge requirements are a separate specification. Use the charger guide to choose a compatible source instead of reading the adapter number as the computer's constant consumption.

Should an M4 owner upgrade?

Start with a constraint you can name. If your M4 meets your app requirements, has enough memory and storage, and lasts long enough for your day, the tables don't provide a battery-only reason to change it. The unchanged Air and base-Pro ratings are especially relevant.

If memory pressure or storage capacity is the problem, compare complete configurations rather than the M number alone. A replacement with the same restrictive capacity may leave the practical bottleneck in place. Check your real memory use before choosing a configuration.

If sustained professional work is the reason, seek an application-specific comparison with the exact chip tiers, project and power settings you need. We have no measured render-time saving or payback period to attach to this decision. Check Apple's current local configuration price when buying; launch prices and a different memory configuration aren't interchangeable quotes.

How Tend helps on either generation

Tend supports both on macOS 15 or later. Free whole-Mac watts, CPU temperature, memory pressure and estimated app power help describe the work on your current Mac; Pro adds the complete sensor list and longer history. Those readings don't create a comparison against a different model you haven't measured.

Questions

Does the M5 MacBook Air last longer than M4?

Apple gives both generations up to 18 hours of video streaming and 15 hours of wireless web. Actual runtime depends on workload, brightness, charge and battery condition.

Does the M5 MacBook Pro have better battery life?

It depends on chip and size. The base and Pro-chip ratings in the table are unchanged, while some Max ratings improve. Use the exact model rather than one M5-wide claim.

Is an M5 MacBook cooler than M4?

This guide has no matched thermal measurements establishing that. Idle-power and battery ratings do not predict temperature during a particular demanding task.

Is it worth upgrading an M4 Air just for battery life?

The advertised runtime is unchanged. Identify a real limitation such as capacity, supported workflow or runtime on your existing battery before comparing replacement configurations.
