Apple's Mac mini power figures
The following values come from Apple's power-consumption article, published 21 September 2026 and checked 23 October 2026. Keep its tested configuration beside the watts.
| Mac mini and Apple-listed configuration | Idle | Maximum column |
|---|---|---|
| M6, 16 GB, 256 GB SSD | 4 W | 70 W, Max |
| M5 Pro, 64 GB, 8 TB SSD | 6 W | 145 W, Max |
| M4, 16 GB, 256 GB SSD | 4 W | 65 W, Max |
| M4 Pro, 64 GB, 8 TB SSD | 5 W | 140 W, Max |
| M2, 24 GB, 2 TB SSD | 7 W | 50 W, CPU Max |
| M2 Pro, 32 GB, 8 TB SSD | 7 W | 100 W, CPU Max |
| M1, 16 GB, 2 TB SSD | 6.8 W | 39 W, CPU Max |
| 2018 Intel i7, 64 GB, 2 TB SSD | 19.9 W | 122 W, CPU Max |
Apple defines idle as Finder alone with default power-management settings. It defines CPU Max as a compute-intensive processor test. Newer rows use the label Max rather than CPU Max; don't silently rename the columns or assume all generations ran an identical workload.
These are wall watts, not chip watts
Apple says its support-table measurements come from the wall and already include power-supply and system losses. No extra efficiency correction is needed for those values.
That boundary matters. A CPU/GPU telemetry number describes a different part of the system from electricity entering the power cord. A relative Energy Impact score in Activity Monitor is different again and isn't a watt reading.
An external monitor, separately powered drive, dock or speaker can add to desk consumption without being included in the computer's own wall reading. A USB-powered accessory's consumption may instead pass through the Mac. Define whether you want the Mac alone or the complete workstation.
The MacBook watts guide explains the same measurement-boundary problem for laptops, where battery and adapter readings add further distinctions.
The environmental report is a separate dataset
Apple's August 2026 environmental report names a 25 August 2026 introduction date. Its power table on PDF page 6 lists 0.19 W off, 0.7 W sleep and 3.0 W idle with display on at 100, 115 and 230 V.
The report describes Ethernet connected and network wake enabled for sleep. Its table isn't separated into a row for each M6 and M5 Pro configuration. We therefore don't assign that 3 W number to every current mini or replace the configuration-specific support table with it.
The two Apple sources do not present identical idle values or identical configuration detail. Keep their figures and conditions separate; this guide doesn't resolve that difference with an invented measurement or an average.
Environmental carbon-footprint totals are another quantity. Kilograms of CO₂ equivalent are a modeled life-cycle result, not watts and not a direct electricity bill.
The power-supply rating isn't constant consumption
The current technical specifications list 155 W maximum continuous power. That specification is not a claim that the mini continuously consumes 155 W while reading a document, sleeping or doing the same work as Apple's idle test.
Likewise, an instantaneous reading is not energy over a day. Match the model, task, connected devices and power state. A continuously running server task is different from an idle Finder even on the same computer.
For your actual setup, a suitable wall-energy meter can measure the intended boundary over a representative period. Use it according to its maker's instructions. No wall-meter or Mac mini test was performed for this article.
Convert watts to energy and cost
Use kWh = average watts × hours ÷ 1,000. Then multiply by your electricity price per kWh. Use your actual tariff and include displays or other devices if calculating the whole desk.
For an explicitly hypothetical example, a 10 W average over 8 hours is 0.08 kWh. Over 30 such days it is 2.4 kWh. At a hypothetical $0.20/kWh, that portion costs $0.48. These are arithmetic assumptions, not a measured mini workload or a local tariff quote.
Don't multiply a published maximum by every hour of ownership unless that really is the intended worst-case assumption. Sleep, idle and active hours should be considered separately.
What about Mac Studio and iMac?
Use their own Apple technical specifications and product environmental reports. The mini table isn't a substitute for those models. An iMac includes a display, so a comparison with a mini alone has an obvious boundary difference.
For an efficiency decision, also consider the useful task completed. A lower instantaneous wattage doesn't alone establish lower energy for a job if it takes a different amount of time. This guide contains no cross-model performance benchmark.
What Tend can show on a desktop
Read-only code inspection confirms that Tend's desktop branch is named Power and says the Mac has no internal battery. Its free app list shows CPU, memory and estimated watts for your account, plus 24-hour energy totals; Pro extends energy views to 7 and 30 days.
The code can use an available SMC system-power reading, with smoothing, but this was not verified on physical Mac mini hardware. It isn't a calibrated wall meter or a guarantee that every model exposes that reading. Internal battery-health and charging features need a laptop; supported wireless-accessory battery readings are separate.
Questions
How many watts does an M6 Mac mini use?
Apple lists 4 W idle and 70 W Max for its specified M6 model with 16 GB memory and a 256 GB SSD. These are dated Apple wall measurements, not a constant everyday draw.
Does a 155 W specification mean it always uses 155 W?
No. Maximum continuous power is a specification, not the consumption of every task. Idle, sleep and active workloads differ.
Why does the environmental report show a different idle number?
Its table and configuration detail differ from the support article. Keep each source’s number with its conditions; this guide does not average them or claim a measured explanation.
Does Tend measure Mac mini wall power?
No calibrated wall-power measurement is claimed. The code can use available system telemetry, but this article did not verify that on physical mini hardware. Estimated app watts are a separate reading.
