What you need
Apple's current guidance is spread across a few support articles rather than one, but it comes down to four things:
- An external display. Any display your Mac supports. How many you can use depends on the model; see the table below.
- An external keyboard and a mouse or trackpad, USB or Bluetooth. Apple's troubleshooting advice for a dark display on a closed laptop is to "make sure that the Mac is connected to power and using an external keyboard and mouse" (Apple, If your external display is dark or low resolution).
- Power. A power adapter, or a display that charges the Mac over USB-C. Apple notes that if the display "provides power to the Mac, a separate power adapter isn't needed" (Apple).
- Permission to connect, on laptops with Apple silicon. "First you need to allow an external display, a mouse, and a keyboard to connect to your Mac laptop. Then you can use your Mac with the lid closed" (Apple, Allow USB and other accessories to connect).
Apple's MacBook Air, MacBook Pro and MacBook Neo user guides all say the same: once a display is connected, you can use it and your accessories with the lid closed. Every current Apple article that covers the closed lid says to connect power, so plan on being plugged in rather than running on battery.
How to set it up
The steps are the same on macOS 15 Sequoia, macOS 26 Tahoe and macOS 27:
- Connect the keyboard and mouse or trackpad. If they're Bluetooth, pair them first with the lid open, in System Settings › Bluetooth.
- Connect power, unless the display charges the Mac.
- Connect the display, to a port on the Mac rather than through a hub if you can. With the lid still open, click Allow if macOS asks whether the display and accessories may connect. Apple says that if you don't allow a display, "your display remains dark".
- Close the lid once your desktop appears on the external display. The Mac carries on there.
To wake it after it sleeps, press a key or click the mouse or trackpad (Apple, Put your Mac to sleep or wake it).
The accessory prompt is controlled by System Settings › Privacy & Security › Accessories › Allow accessories to connect. The default is "Ask for new accessories"; the other choices are "Always ask", "Automatically allow when unlocked" and "Always allow". Apple adds that if the Mac "has been locked for 3 or more days, you might need to unlock it to use a previously allowed accessory again", so after a long time away you may need to open the lid to unlock it.
How many displays each MacBook supports
| MacBook | External displays | Lid must be closed? |
|---|---|---|
| MacBook Neo | 1, up to 4K at 60Hz, on the left USB-C port | No |
| MacBook Air with M1 or M2, 13-inch MacBook Pro with M1 or M2 | 1 | No |
| MacBook Air with M3, MacBook Pro with M3 | 2 | For the second display |
| MacBook Air with M4 or M5 | 2 | No |
| MacBook Pro with M1 Pro, M2 Pro, M3 Pro, M4, M4 Pro or M5 | 2 | No |
| MacBook Pro with M5 Pro | 3 | No |
| MacBook Pro with M1 Max, M2 Max, M3 Max, M4 Max or M5 Max | 4 | No |
For the M3 models, Apple's dual-display steps are specific: connect power and the keyboard and mouse, connect the first display, close the lid, then connect the second. "If you open the laptop lid when both displays are connected, the secondary external display will go dark or disconnect" (Apple, Use dual monitors with your MacBook Air and MacBook Pro with M3 chip). For resolutions per model, see Apple's articles for MacBook Air, MacBook Pro and MacBook Neo.
If the display goes dark or the Mac sleeps
Work through Apple's checks in this order:
- Power and input devices. With the lid closed, the Mac needs power and an external keyboard and mouse.
- The accessory prompt. Open the lid and look for the request to allow the display; until you allow it, the display stays dark.
- A direct connection. If the display is on a hub or dock, try a port on the Mac itself.
- Detect it again. Apple suggests putting the Mac to sleep and waking it; on a laptop, "close the lid for a few seconds, then open the lid again". In System Settings › Displays, holding Option shows a Detect Displays button.
- The display limit. A display beyond your model's limit in the table above stays dark.
If the Mac goes to sleep as soon as you close the lid, one of the first three is usually missing. Closing the lid with no external display connected always puts a MacBook to sleep; to keep it awake with the lid open instead, see how to stop your Mac from sleeping.
Heat with the lid closed
Apple doesn't publish anything specific about heat in closed-display mode. Its general guidance applies: use a Mac laptop at ambient temperatures of 10 to 35 °C (50 to 95 °F), "on a stable work surface that allows for good ventilation", and not "in your bed, on a pillow, or under bedding" (Apple, Keep your Mac laptop within acceptable operating temperatures). On a desk or a stand with air around it, a closed MacBook is fine.
If you'd like to know whether yours runs warmer closed than open under the same work, measure it: how to check your Mac's temperature on Apple silicon covers the options, and why is my MacBook so hot? covers what to do if it does.
The battery when it's plugged in all day
A docked MacBook spends most of its time plugged in, often at or near 100%. Optimized Battery Charging is Apple's answer to that: it's designed to reduce battery wear "by reducing the time that your Mac spends fully charged", and can "delay charging past 80%" when it predicts you'll stay plugged in. On macOS 26.4 or later with Apple silicon, you can also set a Charge Limit between 80% and 100% in System Settings › Battery › Charging (Apple). Whether a limit is worth it for you depends on how often you unplug; Should I use a charge limit? goes through it.
How Tend helps
Tend's free Battery Coach looks at how you actually charge, including long docked days, and tells you whether macOS's Charge Limit would help your battery or just cost you runtime. Tend doesn't control charging itself; macOS does. With the lid closed, the CPU temperature can sit in Tend's menu bar for free, and Tend Pro's Thermals page shows every temperature sensor and the fans, so you can see how your Mac copes when it's shut.
Questions
Can I use my MacBook with the lid closed?
Yes, with an external display, an external keyboard and mouse or trackpad, and power. On a Mac with Apple silicon, allow the display and accessories to connect with the lid open first, then close it. Without an external display, closing the lid puts the Mac to sleep.
Does clamshell mode work on battery?
Apple's current articles on using a MacBook with the lid closed all say to connect it to power, either with an adapter or through a display that charges it over USB-C. Plan on being plugged in.
Is it bad for a MacBook to run with the lid closed?
No, it's a mode Apple supports. Give it a well-ventilated surface, not a bed or bedding, and since a docked Mac is plugged in most of the time, consider Optimized Battery Charging or a Charge Limit for the battery.
Why does my external display go black when I close the lid?
Usually something Apple lists as required is missing: power, an external keyboard and mouse, or permission for the display to connect. Connecting through a hub can also cause it. Try a port on the Mac itself, then close the lid for a few seconds and open it again.
How many external displays can a MacBook Air use with the lid closed?
An M1 or M2 MacBook Air supports one external display. An M3 model supports two, but only with the lid closed. M4 and M5 models support two whether the lid is open or closed.
