MacBook won't turn on? What to try, in order

If your MacBook won’t turn on, check its power connection, hold the power button for about 10 seconds, then release and press it normally. Next test without accessories; if anything appears on screen, the Mac has power and you should follow the startup or display troubleshooting path instead.

First separate no power from a dark display

A black screen doesn't establish that the Mac is off. Listen and look for other signs: a startup sound, a keyboard backlight, a connected display showing a signal or the screen changing when you open the lid. No single sign is conclusive on every model, but a logo, symbol or startup-options window definitely moves the problem into a different category.

If the Mac shows an Apple logo or progress bar, use the stuck-startup guide. If it seems to run but the display stays blank, Apple's blank-screen procedure is the next reference. This page focuses on a MacBook that gives no clear sign of starting.

The power checks below apply to Apple silicon MacBooks, including Air, Pro and Neo. They don't depend on being able to open System Settings, so they remain useful when macOS 15 Sequoia, macOS 26 Tahoe or macOS 27 Golden Gate cannot load.

1. Check the complete power connection

Start at the wall and work toward the Mac. Apple's no-power checklist begins with a secure, undamaged power connection and a working outlet. If available, try a known-compatible adapter and cable.

  1. Check the wall outlet. Test it with a known-working device, or use another outlet that you know works. If a power strip has its own switch, include it in the check.
  2. Reseat the adapter and cable. Check the wall-plug connection, the adapter's USB-C socket and the connection to the Mac. A charger connected to a hub is a different path from one connected directly.
  3. Connect directly for the test. Use a compatible adapter and cable at the Mac, leaving an optional dock or display out of the charging path.
  4. Check the cable's condition. Stop using a damaged cable or one that only works when moved. Don't keep bending it to hold a charging connection.
  5. Confirm suitable power. A USB-C plug alone doesn't prove the source can keep up with this MacBook. See the wattage-by-model table before substituting a small phone charger.

If the battery was empty, leave the compatible power connection in place while checking the next step. There isn't a universal charging wait that proves every MacBook has a hardware fault. Keep the distinction between a battery needing charge and a connection that never supplies usable power.

For MagSafe 3, a repeated flashing amber light has its own Apple troubleshooting sequence; a steady amber light alone can mean charging or a deliberate charging hold. Don't diagnose a failed battery solely from the light's colour.

2. Use the power button once in the documented sequence

A forced shutdown can lose unsaved work. If the Mac was running with a failed display, this action turns that running session off. It does not deliberately erase the disk.

  1. Press and hold for about 10 seconds. Use the Mac's built-in power button. On a MacBook with Touch ID, hold Touch ID.
  2. Release. This completes the forced-off stage.
  3. Press and release normally. Watch for any screen, sound or other sign that it starts.

This is the sequence Apple gives for a Mac that doesn't seem to turn on. Continuing to hold during the second stage is different: on Apple silicon it requests startup options. That can be useful later, but it isn't the same as a normal start.

If it now starts, save and back up your files before investigating further. If an app had frozen, the force-restart guide helps distinguish an isolated freeze from a recurring startup failure.

3. Remove optional accessories and try again

Disconnect printers, external drives, USB hubs, mobile devices and other optional accessories. Keep the MacBook's direct power connection and use its built-in keyboard and display. Apple includes accessory removal because a connected device or its cable can interfere.

Repeat the same hold-release-press sequence with those devices removed. If it works, don't reconnect everything at once. Add one item at a time after the Mac is stable to identify which combination makes the problem return.

An accessory test is especially useful when the problem began after changing a dock, adding storage or moving the laptop between desks. Keep track of the cable as well as the device; substituting only the hub while keeping a faulty cable can obscure the result.

If a different compatible charging cable or adapter changes the result, keep that evidence. The appropriate repair may concern the charging setup rather than the computer itself. Bring the involved components for evaluation instead of purchasing replacements from a guessed diagnosis.

4. Follow the screen you actually reach

Result Next step
Desktop or login window Back up, then check battery, charging and the original trigger.
Apple logo or progress bar Use the stuck-startup procedure, allowing installation time if updating.
Startup options The Mac has power. Recovery or Apple Diagnostics may be available.
Blank display with other signs of operation Use Apple's blank-screen guidance rather than treating it as proven no power.
No change after power and accessory checks Contact Apple for service evaluation.

To request startup options on Apple silicon, start from off and hold the power button until options appear. If they do, the Recovery guide explains what the tools do. Don't choose Erase to see whether it fixes power: erasing cannot repair a cable or supply power to a dead computer.

If startup options are available, Apple Diagnostics is a separate hardware test. A reference code can help service, but a Mac that cannot start the test has not produced a clean test result.

Don't apply Intel reset keys to Apple silicon

Apple says a separate SMC reset isn't needed on Apple silicon. Its SMC page says to connect power and restart, or shut down and turn on again; the reset happens automatically. Holding combinations of Shift, Control and Option is not an additional Apple silicon repair.

If the Mac is Intel-based, follow Apple's model-specific SMC instructions. T2 and older non-T2 laptop procedures differ. Don't infer the right procedure merely from “MacBook Pro” or the presence of a Touch ID button.

When to stop and contact Apple

If there is still no sign of power after the known-good power setup, power-button sequence and accessory test, Apple's next step is service. Tell Support which adapter and cable were tested and whether any light, sound or screen appeared.

If the fault began during a failed installation and the Mac now shows a blank screen or firmware symbol, firmware revival might be relevant. Apple documents revival using a second Mac; restore is a separate operation that erases data. Get that distinction clear before proceeding, especially if the Mac holds the only copy of important files.

Bring the MacBook, its adapter and the cables used for charging. Explain whether a backup exists. There is no need to agree to an erase as a condition of reporting a no-power problem.

Where Tend fits

Tend can't help a Mac that won't start. Once it is running, the free Battery page shows health, cycles and charging information, including reported adapter wattage in Power flow, to give context for a battery or charging investigation.

Questions

How do I turn on a MacBook that does not respond?

Check a compatible power connection, hold the built-in power button for about 10 seconds, release, then press and release normally. If it still fails, remove optional accessories and retry before contacting Apple.

Does a black screen mean my MacBook has no power?

No. A display can stay blank while the Mac is running. A startup sound, keyboard light or a screen symbol helps distinguish that from no power; use Apple’s blank-screen guidance when appropriate.

Should I reset the SMC on an M1 or later MacBook?

Apple says no separate SMC procedure is needed on Apple silicon. Connect power and restart or shut down and start again; its Intel key sequences do not apply.

Will holding the power button erase the Mac?

No, it does not deliberately erase the disk. If the Mac was running, a forced shutdown can lose unsaved changes or interrupt a write.
