Before removing either app
This is a removal guide, not a product review or a comparison of scan results. We did not install or remove either product for this page. The instructions come from MacPaw and MacKeeper’s own documentation, checked today.
Keep a normal backup, and identify your exact app and purchase channel. A MacPaw Store license, an App Store subscription and a Setapp subscription have different billing controls. The app’s absence from your Mac does not establish that a recurring plan has ended.
If a work or school administrator installed the app, ask the IT team and stop before changing it. Managed installation can return after you remove a local copy. For an old MacKeeper edition, read that edition’s instructions first: its developer specifically warns users of version 3 to decrypt files hidden by its Data Encryptor before removal.
How to uninstall current CleanMyMac
MacPaw recommends its self-removal workflow. In the current documentation, the sequence is:
- Open CleanMyMac and select Applications in the sidebar.
- Choose Scan and wait for results.
- Choose Manage My Applications › Uninstaller.
- Select CleanMyMac itself, then choose Uninstall and confirm.
MacPaw also permits dragging the app to the Trash. Its own module is the documented route for associated supporting files. That is a description of the vendor’s method, not an independent guarantee from us that every historical installation leaves zero files.
The app edition matters. MacPaw says the App Store edition cannot remove the core binaries of App Store apps through its Uninstaller because of store restrictions; it can remove related files and leave the app binary for manual removal. Follow the result shown for your edition, rather than deleting unrelated files to make the screen match a different edition.
If you have CleanMyMac X
The older X documentation uses Uninstaller directly in the sidebar: select CleanMyMac X and choose Uninstall. Do not assume the current Applications screen exists in X. MacPaw maintains a separate X removal article linked below.
MacPaw documents that the Menu can stay active after closing the main window. Closing a window is therefore not the same as removing the app. Finish its uninstall workflow, then verify the result before treating a visible Menu as an unrelated leftover.
How to uninstall MacKeeper 7
MacKeeper’s current removal article separates instructions by version. Its version-7 sequence is:
- Quit MacKeeper through MacKeeper › Quit in the top menu, or Command-Q. Its developer warns that closing through the Dashboard does not complete the required quit in the same way.
- Open Finder › Applications and move MacKeeper to the Trash.
- Choose Continue in the removal confirmation and authenticate with Touch ID or the administrator password when requested.
- If the MacKeeperUninstaller prompt appears for an installed Safari StopAd extension, review and allow the documented removal request.
This is the maker’s integrated removal flow. Older versions have their own steps; do not apply version-3 Library leftovers to version 7 as if they were a universal list. If you cannot identify the version or a removal prompt fails, contact the maker rather than collecting scripts from download portals.
Where the makers’ own removal methods are stronger
CleanMyMac’s self-uninstall procedure knows its own supporting components and edition. MacKeeper’s removal confirmation invokes its uninstaller and handles the documented extension case. These are reasons to use the vendors’ routes before a general app-file finder.
Tend’s Uninstaller is limited to the app and support files in your own Library. It cannot promise to remove a competing product’s shared helpers or system extensions. You do not need Tend to carry out either workflow above. For decisions about the products themselves, see CleanMyMac alternatives and the MacKeeper guide.
Cancel the subscription separately
| Purchase channel | Where to cancel |
|---|---|
| CleanMyMac from MacPaw Store | MacPaw Account › CleanMyMac › Cancel Subscription; complete the prompts and verify the status. |
| CleanMyMac from App Store | App Store › your name › Account Settings › Subscriptions › Manage, then the relevant subscription. |
| CleanMyMac through Setapp | Manage the Setapp subscription with Setapp. Removing a catalog app is not a cancellation of that service. |
| MacKeeper direct purchase | The MacKeeper account’s subscription controls, or the support route in the maker’s cancellation instructions. |
Keep the cancellation confirmation. MacPaw says access continues through the paid period after cancellation; that is different from immediate removal or a refund. For any store-billed purchase, use that store’s billing controls. Do not send card details or account passwords to an unofficial removal service.
Verify removal without blanket cleanup
Check Applications and the menu bar, then restart if the vendor or macOS asks. On macOS 15 Sequoia, macOS 26 Tahoe and macOS 27, inspect System Settings › General › Login Items & Extensions for an identifiable item. A stale entry and an active running helper are different observations.
Do not delete shared LaunchDaemons, privileged helpers, security extensions or entire Library folders manually. If the vendor’s current procedure leaves an active component, give its support team the app version and exact name. The general removal guide explains the boundary between an app bundle and privileged components.
Where Tend fits
Tend’s free Startup Items view helps identify supported background entries. Pro can move an ordinary app and reviewed support files in your own Library to the macOS Trash. Use the vendor-specific procedures above first; Tend does not cancel another company’s subscription or remove systemwide security components.
Questions
Do I need another cleaner to remove CleanMyMac?
No. MacPaw documents a self-uninstall workflow, as well as ordinary removal to the Trash. Match the method to your edition.
Why is a menu bar helper still visible?
Closing the main window can leave a menu component running. Finish the vendor’s removal procedure, then check the exact remaining item rather than deleting shared folders.
Does uninstalling either app cancel its subscription?
No. Use MacPaw, MacKeeper, Apple or the purchase service that manages the subscription, and verify the cancellation confirmation.
