Before uninstalling a cloud storage app
The dangerous step is usually deleting files while sync is still active, rather than moving the app to the Trash. A deletion inside a synced folder can reach the cloud and other devices. Quitting the app briefly is not the same as disconnecting the account; it can resume syncing later.
- Wait for uploads to finish and check for sync errors.
- Sign in to the service’s website and confirm important files are present in the intended account.
- Download files you want to keep locally, then copy them to an unsynced folder or an external backup. Do not move them out of the synced location as your first experiment.
- Open sample copies with the sync app quit or without relying on a connection to prove they contain actual file data.
- Only then disconnect the account and uninstall its app.
For Google Drive streaming, Google explicitly says disconnecting the account removes offline streamed files. Mirrored files remain. Make a separate copy before disconnecting, even if a streamed file was marked available offline.
For work or school accounts, ask IT before unlinking. Retention, access permissions and device management can affect what you are allowed to copy or remove.
CloudStorage and online-only files
Modern File Provider integrations use macOS-managed locations, commonly under ~/Library/CloudStorage. The exact service folder and account name vary. Use the service’s Finder location and its own settings rather than assuming a path copied from another Mac matches yours.
A cloud icon can mean the file’s name is present but its content is not. The Finder size can also describe the full logical size rather than the space currently allocated on disk. That is why copying a directory listing is not enough to establish an offline backup.
Dropbox documents Make available offline for online-only files. OneDrive uses Always Keep on This Device for files you want downloaded. Drive for desktop distinguishes streaming from mirroring. Once downloads complete, keep a copy outside the provider’s managed folder for the uninstall.
If your actual goal is disk space, consider the provider’s online-only or free-up-space action instead. Those actions keep cloud copies. Deleting the file from its synced folder is a different operation. See fileproviderd and cloud downloads for the macOS side of this behavior.
Uninstall Dropbox
After verifying your backups, open Dropbox’s menu bar panel and its account settings. Dropbox’s sign-out instructions describe signing out of the desktop app through its account controls. Follow the confirmation for the account you intend to disconnect.
- In the Dropbox menu bar panel, open the profile or avatar menu and choose Quit.
- In Finder, open Go › Applications.
- Move Dropbox.app to the Trash.
Dropbox’s uninstall article says removing the desktop app does not delete the account or remove the Dropbox folder from the disk. Any optional removal of that folder should come only after independent backups and disconnection. The vendor also notes that quitting remaining Dropbox processes may be necessary if the app will not uninstall.
Do not assume every file in a remaining folder is usable offline. Verify the separate copy you made before removing the provider. If two Dropbox installations appear, follow Dropbox’s current File Provider guidance rather than deleting arbitrary account folders.
Unlink and uninstall OneDrive
Open the OneDrive cloud icon in the menu bar, choose its settings control, then Preferences or Settings › Account › Unlink this Mac. Microsoft’s documentation uses both Preferences and Settings depending on the app interface. Confirm the account, then quit OneDrive.
In Finder, open Applications and move OneDrive.app to the Trash. Microsoft’s instructions for replacing an installed edition use this unlink, exit and Trash sequence. Its Mac sync troubleshooting page also documents unlinking.
Unlinking does not delete your cloud account. Keep the backup copies and check access on OneDrive’s website. A cloud-only entry is not transformed into a full local file by removing the sync app. If Desktop or Documents was protected by OneDrive, review that feature’s stop-backup instructions before removal so you know where the files will live.
Disconnect and uninstall Google Drive for desktop
Check whether you use streamed or mirrored files before starting. Google’s current instructions describe opening the Drive menu bar panel, selecting the profile picture and choosing Disconnect account. Older interfaces may put disconnect controls in Preferences. Follow the current Drive for desktop guide for your version.
After the account is disconnected and you have confirmed the separate file copies, quit Drive for desktop. Move the Google Drive app from Applications to the Trash using Google’s uninstall instructions. Repeat the account review if you had more than one account connected.
Google’s offline-file documentation makes an important distinction: offline streamed data is removed when you disconnect, while mirrored files remain. Native Google documents may also need an export if you need a file usable outside Google’s services. A shortcut to an online document is not the document’s editable content.
Box Drive and remaining helpers
For Box Drive, use Box’s own uninstallation procedure: quit Box Drive, obtain the Box Reset Tool from that support page, open it and choose Uninstall. Do not reuse another provider’s folder or cache cleanup steps. Confirm pending uploads and local copies before following the vendor’s removal process.
On macOS 15 Sequoia, macOS 26 Tahoe and macOS 27, review background items at System Settings › General › Login Items & Extensions. This is a place to inspect a remaining helper, not an instruction to disable every file-provider extension. macOS and other apps use cloud integration too.
If the app is managed or returns after removal, contact IT. If a personal installation leaves a broken Finder entry, use the provider’s documented recovery steps or support. Do not delete the CloudStorage parent folder, system File Provider files or shared launch daemons by hand.
Account deletion and billing
Uninstalling the app leaves the service account and subscription separate. Cancel through the service or store that bills you if that is your intention. Read what a plan change does to storage allowance and shared access before canceling; moving the app to the Trash does not preserve cloud files indefinitely.
How Tend helps
Tend’s free Files › Cloud view shows how much iCloud Drive, Google Drive, OneDrive and Dropbox keep downloaded in your home folder. For the third-party services it shows size and leaves download management to their own apps. It does not replace unlinking or export cloud-only documents.
Pro’s Uninstaller moves a selected app and matched support files in your own Library to the macOS Trash; Startup Items is free for reviewing identified helpers. Neither removes all-user daemons or turns cloud placeholders into backups. Use the provider’s sequence first, then the general uninstall workflow.
Questions
Will uninstalling Dropbox delete my files?
Dropbox says uninstalling its desktop app does not delete the account or remove the Dropbox folder from the disk. Back up needed files independently and disconnect first before considering any folder cleanup.
What happens to Google Drive offline files when I disconnect?
Google says offline streamed files are removed when you disconnect the account, while mirrored files remain. Copy needed content outside the managed folder before disconnecting.
Can I delete the CloudStorage folder?
Do not remove the CloudStorage parent folder as a cleanup step. It contains provider-managed locations; use each service’s own download, unlink and uninstall controls.
Does removing OneDrive cancel Microsoft 365?
No. Uninstalling the app, unlinking its account and canceling the paid plan are separate actions.
