Before uninstalling Zoom
Finish any meeting or recording, and save work in Zoom products before proceeding. If this is a work or school installation, ask your IT team and stop here. The organization may manage the app, account, recording retention and permissions; a local uninstall is not a way to change those policies.
Decide whether you are troubleshooting a reinstall, removing the app permanently, or ending paid service. Those are different tasks. A normal uninstall may be all you need for a reinstall. Do not add a credential reset merely because an online checklist calls it “complete.”
Check Zoom Workplace › Settings › Recording for the actual local recording storage location. Zoom documents the default Mac location as ~/Documents/Zoom, but you may have changed it. Open that location and copy recordings you need to a separate backup. Check that the copies open before deleting anything.
Computer recordings and cloud recordings have different storage and retention. Finding a file in Documents does not prove a cloud recording is backed up, and an account link does not preserve an unsaved local recording. Do not delete your Zoom account as an app-removal shortcut.
Uninstall through Zoom Workplace
- Open the Zoom Workplace desktop app.
- In the menu bar at the top of the screen, choose Zoom Workplace › Uninstall Zoom Workplace.
- Read the confirmation, then choose OK to remove the desktop app and its components.
- If you are troubleshooting, use Zoom’s official Download Center for the replacement, then test the original problem before doing additional cleanup.
These are Zoom’s current documented macOS steps, checked 23 October 2026. Older installations may use the name zoom.us or a different app label. Match the instructions to the installed product; Zoom Rooms, browser extensions and add-ins are not automatically the same installation as Zoom Workplace.
We did not uninstall or reinstall software while writing this page. The removal steps come from Zoom’s documentation, rather than a claim that a clean install fixed a problem on this Mac.
Is CleanZoom the Mac uninstaller?
In the checked Zoom article, the CleanZoom download is in the Windows section. The macOS section instead documents the app’s own uninstall menu and optional Keychain cleanup. Do not run a Windows cleanup recipe or look for an equivalent Mac utility from an unofficial download site.
If the Mac app cannot open or its uninstall option is unavailable, follow Zoom Support for the exact installed edition. Apple’s ordinary fallback is to quit an app and move it from Applications to the Trash, but that is not evidence that every helper or credential has been removed. The general uninstall guide explains this distinction.
An “app is open” message calls for quitting it, not deleting system files. Save any remaining work and use the app that will not delete checklist. If management prevents removal or Zoom immediately returns, ask the administrator.
Do not erase Zoom keys casually
Zoom’s optional clean-uninstall procedure names Keychain entries beginning with Zoom Safe. That is a separate credential operation, not an ordinary cache cleanup. We do not recommend deleting those entries simply to recover a small amount of storage or prepare a routine reinstall.
If you actually need a credential reset, read Zoom’s current warning and arrange recovery with the account administrator before following that vendor procedure. Keep the standard uninstall if you cannot establish what those keys protect. Do not remove unrelated Keychain items or reset the whole login keychain.
What to check afterward
Confirm the app is gone from Applications, then restart if the vendor or a removal prompt requests it. Check System Settings › General › Login Items & Extensions on macOS 15 Sequoia, macOS 26 Tahoe and macOS 27 for an identifiable remaining Zoom item. A listed disabled item is not proof that a helper is still running.
Do not use a generic list of old Zoom Library paths as a deletion script. The checked current vendor procedure does not ask you to clear an entire user Library, and older editions can differ. Browser extensions or calendar integrations need their own removal controls if you installed them separately.
Keep recordings until you have verified the backup and decided they are no longer needed. An app-removal tool cannot decide whether a meeting recording is part of your work, a legal record or a personal keepsake.
Cancel a paid plan separately
For a subscription bought directly from Zoom, use the Zoom web portal’s Plans and billing area and the plan’s cancellation control. Zoom notes that billing interfaces differ and that some contracts need its support or account executive. Verify the confirmation and renewal status rather than assuming app removal stopped billing.
If Apple or another store billed you, cancel through that provider. An organization’s paid account is the organization’s to manage. Removing a local app does not close the account, cancel an add-on or request a refund.
Where Tend fits
Zoom’s own uninstaller comes first. Tend Pro can move an ordinary app and reviewed support files in your own Library to the Trash, but it does not replace Zoom’s encrypted-data recovery process, remove shared system components or cancel billing.
Tend’s free Startup Items view can help identify an entry left behind, and free Files can locate large recordings inside your home folder. Reviewed moves to the Trash are Pro. Use the startup guide before changing a helper you cannot identify.
Questions
Does uninstalling Zoom delete my recordings?
Back up the actual recording folder before removal rather than relying on that assumption. Zoom’s default Mac computer-recording location is ~/Documents/Zoom, but the setting can be changed.
Should I delete Zoom Safe Keychain entries?
Only after understanding Zoom’s warning and establishing any required key backup or escrow. Removing encryption keys can make protected Mail messages and Phone voicemails unreadable.
Does uninstalling Zoom cancel my subscription?
No. Cancel a directly purchased plan in Zoom’s billing portal, or use the store or organization that manages the subscription.
