What contactsd does
The installed Apple manual says contactsd manages information in the contacts database, serves apps using the Contacts API and performs background maintenance. It is not intended to be invoked directly. The service can therefore be active when the Contacts window is closed.
That role is broader than one cloud account. The Contacts app can combine iCloud, Google, Exchange and other sources, as well as local contacts. A high CPU reading does not identify which account is responsible or establish that an address book is too large.
On our read-only macOS 27.0.1 check on 23 October 2026, contactsd ran as the signed-in user at /System/Library/Frameworks/Contacts.framework/Support/contactsd. Use that observation to identify the expected Apple service, not as a promise that every system has an identical session.
Confirm the symptom before changing data
Open Activity Monitor, choose View › All Processes and search for contactsd. Watch whether CPU remains high and whether the Mac is slow, warm or failing to show a recent contact edit. A one-time spike is less useful than a repeatable symptom.
Note what happened before the activity began: an account was added, an import completed, an app requested contact access or an update finished. These are investigative leads, not proof of causation. We did not import contacts or change an account for this guide.
If the path is not the expected Apple location, investigate that file separately. Do not remove a file merely because its name resembles contactsd, and do not delete the genuine system binary as a performance step.
Back up contacts before a reset or merge
- Open Contacts and inspect the accounts. Check that the important cards are actually visible. A hidden account is different from missing server data.
- Export an archive. Apple documents File › Export › Contacts Archive for an archive of the contacts. Store it somewhere you can find outside any folder you intend to modify.
- Export important selected cards when useful. File › Export › Export vCard creates a separate copy of the selected contacts. Check whether notes and photos are included in your export settings.
- Verify the authoritative service. Check the relevant account’s own web or device view. Make sure recent edits reached that service before removing its local connection.
- Keep the backup private. An address book can contain other people’s details and notes. Do not upload it to a public troubleshooting thread.
A backup is preparation, not an instruction to delete the existing database. Avoid generic advice to remove AddressBook folders from your Library. Those files can hold local-only data and pending edits that have not reached a server.
If contacts are not syncing
For iCloud, Apple’s checklist starts with service status, current software, the same Apple Account, Contacts enabled and correct date and time. Work through those checks before disconnecting the entire account. Google and Exchange accounts require their own provider’s status and authentication checks.
In Contacts, use Contacts › Accounts or the account list in settings to identify the source. If several accounts are present, inspect the relevant list rather than assuming every card belongs to iCloud. Changing the default account affects where new cards go; it does not move existing cards automatically.
Apple documents temporarily turning off Contacts for an account, but that removes that account’s contacts from the Mac until it is enabled again. Only consider it after the backup and server check, and read any prompt carefully. For a work or school account, ask IT before removing or re-adding it.
Restart Contacts normally, save other work and restart the Mac if necessary. If the problem returns with the same account, retain the exact error and timing for the provider or Apple Support. Repeated sign-outs can make the original failure harder to distinguish.
If you see duplicate cards
Duplicates can exist within one account or appear because separate accounts contain the same person. Apple distinguishes merging duplicates within an account from linking cards across accounts. The combined view alone does not tell you which situation you have.
After making a backup, inspect a few examples and their account membership. Apple’s documented commands include Card › Look for Duplicates and Card › Merge Selected Cards. Review the outcome rather than running a merge simply to lower a CPU reading.
Merging changes contact information. A sync service can propagate changes to other devices. It is not an established cure for every busy contactsd process, and this guide claims no measured CPU improvement from deduplication.
If it stays busy without a sync error
Look at apps that use Contacts and at a repeatable task. A process sample captured during the problem can preserve evidence for support, but it does not automatically identify the account or app responsible. Review the report before sharing it.
If the whole Mac is sluggish, follow the slow Mac guide for memory and storage checks. The identity services described in identityservicesd and imagent have different roles; changing Messages settings is not a general contacts-database repair.
Where Tend fits
Tend’s free current-user app list can show a user-owned contactsd as its own process. Its executable is outside Contacts.app, so Tend does not automatically fold it into Contacts based on the service’s name or the API it provides.
Current CPU, memory and estimated watts help show whether the busy period is substantial. They cannot tell which contact card or sync account caused it. Tend’s clean-up tools are not a contacts database repair or deduplication tool.
Questions
Is contactsd safe to delete?
Do not delete Apple’s contactsd binary or remove its database as a generic cleanup. It supports contact information used by apps; preserve a contacts backup before troubleshooting data.
Why is contactsd running when Contacts is closed?
The service supplies the Contacts API and performs background maintenance. Its work is not restricted to an open Contacts window.
Should I merge duplicates to fix high CPU?
Only merge after a backup and after confirming actual duplicate cards. A merge changes data and is not a documented cure for every busy contactsd process.
