Before removing a browser extension
Save any work the extension stores and note what you will need to replace. Password managers, research tools and accessibility helpers can hold settings or workflows you still rely on. Removing an extension is different from uninstalling the browser or deleting the account behind the extension.
If your goal is to diagnose a broken website, turn off one ordinary extension and test the page first. You can turn it back on if it was unrelated. If it came from work or school, ask the administrator before changing it. Do not bypass an organizational policy to make a Remove button appear.
Deleting history or clearing cookies does not uninstall an extension. Conversely, removing an extension does not promise to erase data already sent to its service. The browser-history guide covers that different task.
Remove Safari extensions
- Open Safari › Settings › Extensions.
- Select the extension. Deselect its checkbox if you only want to disable it while testing.
- To remove it, choose Uninstall and follow the instruction shown.
- If Safari identifies a containing app, quit that app and remove it through its documented procedure or Finder.
- Revisit the extensions list and test the page, refreshing or opening a new page if necessary.
These settings exist on Safari used with macOS 15 Sequoia, macOS 26 Tahoe and macOS 27. App-based Safari extensions are distributed inside a containing app. Read the app name before deleting it: one app can provide more than the single browser extension you were trying to remove.
Current Safari on macOS 27 can also create an extension through its Apple Intelligence interface. Do not assume every item therefore has a separate application you should hunt for in Finder. Use Safari’s own removal control for the item and follow the prompt it actually shows.
If you want the containing app to remain for other functions, disabling the extension may be the appropriate choice. For an app that will not quit or move to the Trash, use the blocked app-removal checklist, rather than deleting the extension’s internal files manually.
Remove a Chrome extension
- Open the Chrome profile that has the extension.
- Choose Chrome menu › Extensions › Manage extensions, or type
chrome://extensionsinto the address bar. - Find the exact extension and choose Remove.
- Confirm Remove, then test the page or browser behavior that concerned you.
Google also documents right-clicking the extension’s toolbar icon and choosing Remove from Chrome. Unpin is different: it hides the toolbar icon while leaving the extension installed. An extension absent from the toolbar can still be present in Manage extensions.
Check the profile before repeating removal. A work profile and a personal profile can have different extension sets. If you intend to keep an extension but limit where it runs, Chrome’s Details and site-access controls offer a narrower choice. Read the permissions rather than enabling access to every website by default.
If an extension returns or cannot be removed
In Chrome, check for Managed by your organization in the menu. Google documents chrome://management for management information and chrome://policy for applied policies. These pages inspect the situation; they do not authorize changing it.
An organization can install extensions and restrict settings. An app can also add an extension. If a removal does not stick, identify the source rather than deleting the whole Chrome profile. The source may be an intended policy or another installed program, and the process needs the right owner.
On a personal Mac with unexpected management or browser redirection, use Google’s managed-browser troubleshooting and the malware-removal guide. A missing Remove control alone does not prove malware. Equally, a familiar name or icon does not establish that an extension deserves broad access.
Do not remove system profiles, overwrite policy files, disable macOS protections or install a random extension cleaner. Keep the extension name and any visible management message for support. If it is a work device, stop at IT.
Other devices and synchronized settings
Safari offers Share across devices and can make compatible extensions available on another device using the same Apple Account. That does not mean uninstalling a containing Mac app has erased every installation or setting on every device.
Likewise, account or browser synchronization can affect an extension’s availability. Use the browser’s own removal control and check the device where the problem remains. Do not delete an entire cloud account to stop a single extension.
If you are removing Chrome itself, the Chrome uninstall guide starts with exporting or preserving browser data. Extension removal is usually the smaller change when the browser is otherwise working.
Check the result without clearing everything
Reopen the correct extensions page and confirm the item is absent or disabled as intended. Test the website again with a refreshed page. If an unrelated problem remains, restore any harmless diagnostic toggle and continue with the actual browser symptom.
For website permissions, inspect the browser’s site settings separately. A push notification permission or changed homepage can remain even when an extension is gone. Do not assume one successful uninstall automatically reverses every past setting change.
The cache guide explains another narrowly scoped browser repair. Clearing saved passwords, all website data or every profile is disproportionate when you only need to remove one add-on.
Where Tend fits
Tend’s free Maintenance view lists detected browser extensions and their available details. Pro can move eligible Chrome-family extension folders to the Trash while that browser is closed. The browser may restore missing folders through sync or its own checks; removing the extension in the browser is the reliable route.
Tend does not uninstall Safari extensions directly; use Safari and the containing app where appropriate. Its extension list is not an antivirus verdict. The free Security check reads protection settings, while XProtect is part of macOS’s malware protection.
Questions
Is Unpin the same as removing a Chrome extension?
No. Unpin hides the toolbar button. Remove from Chrome or Manage extensions › Remove uninstalls the extension from that profile.
Why does Safari ask me to remove an app?
App-based Safari extensions come inside a containing application. Review the app and any other functions you need before removing it.
Why can’t I remove a managed extension?
An organization may control it through policy. Check the management information and ask the administrator instead of bypassing the restriction.
Does removing an extension erase browsing history?
No. History, cookies, account data and website permissions have their own controls. Change only the data or setting you actually intend to remove.
