MacBook battery replacement cost and your options

Apple’s US out-of-warranty battery estimates currently range from $149 for MacBook Neo to $249 for many MacBook Pro models. The tables below were checked on 23 October 2026; AppleCare battery coverage, tax, shipping, inspection and other damage can change what you actually pay.

MacBook battery replacement cost: current US estimates

These are US dollar estimates directly from Apple's live laptop service estimator, checked 23 October 2026. We selected the listed models in the estimator; we did not book a repair or obtain a personalized inspection quote. They are battery-service prices, not prices for every fault that makes a Mac stop charging.

MacBook model Battery estimate, USD
MacBook Neo, 13-inch A18 Pro $149
13-inch Air, M4 or M5 $179
13-inch Air, M1, M2 or M3 $159
15-inch Air, M2, M3, M4 or M5 $199
Intel Air models listed from 2017–2020 $159
14-inch Pro with M5, M5 Pro or M5 Max $229
16-inch Pro with M5 Pro or M5 Max $249
Other Pro models listed from 2019 through M4 $249
12-inch MacBook, Retina 2017 $249

Use Apple's estimator again before arranging service. It says final fees follow inspection, may include tax and shipping, and can differ at Apple Authorized Service Providers, which set their own fees. A battery estimate doesn't include an unrelated repair merely because both issues affect power.

For a Mac outside the US, switch the estimator to the relevant country. Don't convert this table into a local quote: service availability, taxes and model options differ. If your exact model is absent, ask Apple about service options rather than applying the price of a similar-looking laptop.

AppleCare and warranty can change the cost

Apple's current AppleCare page says battery replacement is included at no extra charge when capacity drops below 80%, under the applicable active plan. Check coverage for the specific Mac and confirm the service assessment; “about 80%” in a third-party app is not a guaranteed eligibility decision.

The ordinary limited warranty covers manufacturing issues; normal battery wear is excluded. A defective battery and a battery that has gradually worn down are different cases. Apple's service page also notes that consumer-law rights can apply, so don't assume an expired standard warranty alone settles every coverage question.

Before paying, check whether the Mac has an active plan and ask what the estimate includes. If there is other damage, get a written description of any additional work and its cost. Don't compare an out-of-warranty battery-only estimate with a broader repair quote as though they were the same job.

When a replacement is worth considering

Start with the experience you want to improve. If the Mac works well but no longer lasts long enough away from power, restoring battery capacity can address that specific limitation. If it is also too slow for your work, has display damage or can't run required software, a new battery doesn't solve those other constraints.

Check System Settings › Battery › Battery Health on macOS 15 Sequoia, macOS 26 Tahoe or macOS 27 Golden Gate. The battery-health guide explains Maximum Capacity, condition and cycle count. Apple's own reported condition is the first reference for service.

Service Recommended means reduced charge-holding ability or a battery not functioning normally. Apple says you can continue using a Mac showing that status and seek service if reduced capacity affects your experience. The warning isn't a countdown requiring replacement that day; see what the status means.

Don't use cycle count alone as the verdict. It helps describe usage, but it doesn't explain every sudden shutdown, connector fault or short-runtime complaint. A new battery won't stop an app doing heavy work. If charge drops mainly during one task, investigate battery drain before assuming age is the only cause.

Before paying, rule out a charging problem

A battery that isn't currently charging is not automatically worn out. macOS can deliberately pause charging; a cable or adapter can fail; a low-powered source can struggle while the Mac is working. Follow the not-charging checks and compare the adapter with the model's recommended wattage.

Write down whether the fault occurs only unplugged, only through a dock, or with a particular cable. Keep the exact battery condition and any diagnostic reference code. This helps the service provider distinguish a battery repair from an intermittent charging connection.

A sudden change deserves attention even when a percentage looks acceptable. Bring the symptom and its circumstances to the assessment rather than asking for a particular part based on an app reading.

Your repair options

  • Apple Store or mail-in service. Apple's service page describes both, with availability depending on location. The final quote follows inspection.
  • Apple Authorized Service Provider. Apple lists this as an approved route, but providers may set their own fees. Ask whether the estimate includes parts, labor, tax and any diagnostic charge.
  • Independent Repair Provider. Apple's battery-service guidance includes providers using genuine Apple parts. Ask what part will be used and what service guarantee applies.
  • Self Service Repair. Apple makes genuine parts available for eligible out-of-warranty repairs. Check the model-specific manual, required tools and eligibility before treating it as a simple battery purchase.

This is not a do-it-yourself battery-removal guide. Apple warns that repairs by untrained people or with nongenuine parts can damage equipment and that such damage isn't covered by the warranty. A parts price is also not the same as the total of parts, tools, time and any required completion steps.

Ask how long the provider expects to keep the Mac and whether the needed part is available. We have no verified universal turnaround time to promise. A local same-day possibility and a mail-in estimate are different service arrangements.

Prepare before handing the Mac over

Apple's service-preparation instructions start with a backup, because service may require erasing or replacing the startup disk. Confirm that the backup contains the files you need before the appointment. Syncing selected folders to a cloud service is not automatically the same as a complete backup.

Preparation now differs by macOS version. Apple says macOS 27 or later uses Ready for Repair or Trade-In; on macOS 26 or earlier, follow its instruction to turn off Find My Mac. Follow Apple's linked steps for your version rather than applying an older screenshot to every Mac.

Apple also asks owners of previously repaired Apple silicon Macs on macOS 26 or later to check for an unfinished repair with Repair Assistant. Follow the provider's mail-in packaging instructions when applicable, and bring the power cable and any accessory connected with the fault for an in-person evaluation.

Check the result after replacement

Confirm that the Mac charges using the intended adapter and that the original symptom has improved. Compare like with like: the same task and brightness are more meaningful than comparing a quiet afternoon with a video-call day.

Keep the repair record and service guarantee. Apple says its service and replacement parts are guaranteed for 90 days or the remaining warranty term, whichever is longer, in addition to applicable rights and coverage. If the symptom remains, report it while the repair details are current.

Where Tend fits

Tend's free Battery page shows health and cycle count; Pro keeps a daily health record so you can describe a trend at service. Those readings provide context, not a repair quote or a diagnosis of physical damage, and they don't decide AppleCare eligibility.
