What “Service Recommended” means
You'll find it in System Settings › Battery, next to Battery Health. Apple's definition is short: the battery's ability to hold charge is less than when it was new, or the battery isn't functioning normally (Apple).
What it doesn't mean:
- It isn't a safety warning. Apple says you can safely continue to use your Mac.
- It isn't tied to a number Apple publishes. Apple's article doesn't say at what Maximum Capacity the label appears. If an app or a forum post says "it switches at 80%", that isn't from Apple.
- It isn't a countdown. The battery doesn't stop working on a set date. You get less runtime from each charge, and that's all most people notice.
On older versions of macOS without Battery Health, hold Option and click the battery icon in the menu bar. The same idea shows up there as Replace Soon, Replace Now or Service Battery.
Apple also says third-party apps that report battery condition might not be accurate, and recommends relying on what macOS reports. If an app disagrees with System Settings, go with System Settings.
Is it safe to keep using your Mac?
Yes. Apple's wording is that you can safely continue to use your Mac, and get service if the lower capacity is affecting your experience. So the decision is about convenience, not danger. If you're mostly at a desk and plugged in, a worn battery may not matter to you for a long time. If you work away from power, it will.
One exception isn't about the label. If the case starts to bulge, the bottom no longer sits flat, or the trackpad stops clicking properly, the battery itself may be physically damaged. Apple's Service Recommended article doesn't cover that. Stop using and charging the Mac, and contact Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider.
Check the numbers behind it
Click the info button next to Battery Health to see Maximum Capacity (on macOS 26 and 27; on macOS 15 it may not be listed), and hold Option while choosing Apple menu › System Information, then Power, to see the cycle count. Every MacBook with Apple silicon is rated for 1,000 cycles, keeping up to 80% of its original capacity at that count (Apple). Our guide on how to check battery health explains each number and a Terminal command that prints all three.
The numbers help you judge how far along the battery is. A battery past its rated cycles is simply worn. One with few cycles and a low Maximum Capacity has aged faster than the count suggests, which matters if it's still under warranty.
When it appears early
Apple says a battery's chemical age comes from a combination of things, including its temperature history and charging pattern, not just time or cycles (Apple). Heat matters most: Apple says ambient temperatures above 35 °C (95 °F) can permanently damage battery capacity. A Mac that often works hard while charging, sits in a hot room, or lives on a soft surface that blocks airflow can show Service Recommended sooner. See why your MacBook runs hot.
The other half of Apple's definition, "isn't functioning normally", covers faults as well as wear. If your Mac is under a year old, Apple's One Year Limited Warranty includes replacement of a defective battery. Normal wear isn't covered by the warranty.
Your options
Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider
You can book a Genius Bar appointment, go to an Apple Authorized Service Provider, or use mail-in service where it's offered. Apple's prices are below; Authorized Service Providers set their own fees and give their own estimate. Apple guarantees its service and parts for 90 days or the rest of your warranty or AppleCare plan, whichever is longer.
AppleCare+
If you have AppleCare+ or AppleCare One and your battery holds less than 80% of its original capacity, Apple replaces it at no extra charge (Apple). Check your coverage before paying for anything.
Self Service Repair
Apple sells genuine parts and tools, and publishes repair manuals, for people experienced with repairing electronics. The Self Service Repair page leads with display repairs, but Mac laptop repair manuals include a battery procedure; the MacBook Air (13-inch, M3, 2024) manual is one example. It's only available in some countries and for specific models. Apple warns that repairs by untrained people can damage the Mac, and that damage isn't covered by warranty.
Independent repair shops
Apple says built-in batteries should be replaced only by Apple, an Apple Authorized Service Provider, or an Independent Repair Provider that uses genuine Apple parts. If you use an independent shop, ask three things: whether it uses genuine Apple parts, whether it's an Apple Independent Repair Provider, and what warranty it gives on the repair. Apple's warranty and AppleCare don't cover repairs done by Independent Repair Providers, though the provider's own warranty may.

Before you book
Apple's checklist (Get your Mac ready for service) comes down to this:
- Back up your Mac. A battery job shouldn't touch your data, but Apple asks for a backup in case the startup disk has to be erased or replaced.
- Prepare it for the technician. On macOS 27, turn on Ready for Repair or Trade-In. On macOS 26 or earlier, turn off Find My Mac.
- Know your login. Bring the name and password of your macOS user account, the power cable, and your receipt if you have it. You may be asked for your Apple Account password and ID.
Apple doesn't publish a standard turnaround time for battery service. It depends on parts and on whether you go in person or mail it in, so ask when you book.
How Tend helps
Tend's free Battery page shows how far through its rated cycles your battery is, next to its health. Tend Pro keeps a daily health record, so you can see whether capacity slid slowly over months or dropped suddenly. A sudden drop is worth mentioning when you take the Mac in, especially if it's under warranty.
Questions
Is it safe to use a MacBook when the battery says Service Recommended?
Yes. Apple says you can safely continue to use your Mac, and get service if the lower charging capacity is affecting your experience. The exception is physical damage: if the case bulges or the trackpad stops clicking properly, stop using it and contact Apple.
How much does it cost to replace a MacBook battery?
From Apple in the US, $149 to $249 before tax, depending on the model: $149 for MacBook Neo, $159 to $199 for MacBook Air, and $229 to $249 for MacBook Pro (Apple's estimator, 13 October 2026). With AppleCare+ it's free once capacity is below 80%.
Does AppleCare+ cover battery replacement?
Yes, when the battery holds less than 80% of its original capacity. AppleCare One includes the same battery coverage. Separately, Apple's standard one-year warranty covers a defective battery, but not normal wear.
Can “Service Recommended” go away on its own?
Apple doesn't say it can. Your Mac may recalibrate its maximum capacity after a software update, which can change the numbers a little, but a worn battery doesn't regain capacity. If the label disappears after an update, keep an eye on it rather than counting on it.
How long does an Apple battery replacement take?
Apple doesn't publish a standard time. It depends on parts availability and on whether you visit an Apple Store, an Authorized Service Provider or use mail-in service. Ask when you book, and back up your Mac first.
