Which, if either, should you choose?
These are broad paid bundles. They are not required to keep every Mac healthy, and the number of modules does not establish better cleanup or security. Start with the task: find large files, remove an app, investigate malware or get help with a problem.
For ordinary space management, open System Settings › General › Storage. Review large files you recognize, keep a backup and remove them through the owning app where appropriate. A browser’s cache control or a vendor uninstaller may be sufficient for a narrower job.
This comparison uses the makers’ documented features and current published offers. We did not install either app, measure recovered space, test malware detection or benchmark overhead. There are no ratings or claims that one safely deletes more on the same Mac.
CleanMyMac and MacKeeper side by side
| Question | CleanMyMac | MacKeeper |
|---|---|---|
| Main scope | Cleanup, app management and malware-related tools. | Cleanup, antivirus, VPN and support features. |
| Useful distinction | A broader app-management workflow; recent notes add Gmail cleanup and a Chrome companion. | Security, VPN and in-app support chat within one bundle. |
| Checked price | US$39.95 per year for one Mac. | US$10.95 per month for one Mac; discounted annual choices also offered. |
| Free use | A trial, rather than an unlimited permanent free cleaning tier. | Limited trial or one-use functions, rather than an unlimited paid bundle. |
| Current published release | 5.7.2, 15 October 2026, from release notes. | 7.8, September 2026, listed on the homepage. |
| Published minimum | macOS 11 or later, with macOS 27 listed. | Homepage says macOS 10.15 or later. |
| Chip details | A separate architecture list was not stated on the checked requirements page. | Support page lists Intel and Apple M1 or newer, alongside older edition requirements. |
The price rows have different billing periods. They are not a like-for-like annual total. Confirm the selected device count, first term, renewal amount and cancellation route rather than comparing only the largest displayed discount.
Where CleanMyMac is stronger
MacPaw combines storage review and app management in a cleanup-oriented workflow. Its current release notes also document Gmail cleanup and a Chrome companion. That is relevant when you specifically want those tasks together, rather than a VPN or a support-chat subscription.
The distinction is documented scope, not a measured claim that CleanMyMac finds more unnecessary files. Review each module’s proposed changes. An app support folder can contain documents or state you need even when the app itself is unwanted.
Version and support: the release notes list 5.7.2, 15 October 2026. The checked store footer still displays an older version, so we use the release history for the current release. MacPaw lists macOS 11 or later, including 27; its checked operating-system page does not separately enumerate processor architectures.
Watch out for: edition differences. MacPaw documents separate direct, App Store and Setapp-related billing or capability considerations. Match the installed edition before following removal instructions or assuming a direct-store subscription manages an Apple purchase.
Where MacKeeper is stronger
MacKeeper’s bundle explicitly includes antivirus, VPN and in-app support chat alongside cleanup. Those are concrete reasons to consider it if you want a security-and-assistance subscription. They are features a simple disk map or Tend’s settings check does not provide.
A chat service can be valuable when you want guided help, but its presence is not a guarantee that every problem can be diagnosed remotely or that a recommended cleanup is necessary. Keep control of the files being removed and ask what an action changes.
Version and support: the homepage lists 7.8, September 2026 and macOS 10.15 or later. Its system-requirements help lists Intel and Apple M1 or newer processors but also contains older edition information. Verify the installed edition and exact macOS release with the vendor if compatibility is a deciding factor.
Watch out for: trial limits and billing. A free scan, a one-use action and a paid recurring bundle are different access models. The checked monthly quote is US$10.95 for one Mac; selecting a discounted annual plan changes both the total billed and the renewal context.
Are they safe to use?
Download the intended app from its official source and read the current permissions and privacy terms. We have not audited the current binaries, so neither gets a blanket safety certificate here. A recognized vendor name does not make every file selected for cleanup unnecessary.
Apple’s signing and notarization mechanisms address software identity and checks for known malicious content. They are not an endorsement of value, privacy choices or every deletion a user approves. Treat a vendor’s notarization statement within that limited scope.
MacKeeper’s past reputation and legal history deserve dated evidence. The separate MacKeeper investigation covers that history and current product claims. This comparison does not turn an old allegation into a finding about today’s release, or transfer one company’s history to the other.
If your concern is malware, compare actual Mac protection and the organization’s requirements. A cleanup result and a low resource-use number are not malware tests. Read what macOS already does before deciding which additional security layer, if any, you need.
When neither is the better purchase
Choose neither when the problem is simply a few large downloads, an app with its own uninstaller or a browser cache that can be cleared in settings. Our free-up-space guide starts with those built-in controls.
If you only need a view of disk usage, use the disk analyzer comparison. If you need a broad menu of cleanup options, Mac cleaners by job includes tools with narrower scopes and different payment models.
Do not buy another bundle because a scan labels a large quantity of data “junk.” Check the contents, the actual storage problem and the cost of replacing the files. A large cache can be rebuilt, but that may still mean downloads and waiting; app data can be irreplaceable.
Before buying, renewing or removing either
- Back up important data. Include local-only documents and app databases before any cleanup.
- Try the actual workflow. Read trial limits and inspect the preview. Do not approve a broad removal merely to see a large number fall.
- Check the complete price. Match currency, devices, billing period, renewal and any additional services.
- Keep the billing route. Direct vendor, Apple and Setapp subscriptions can require different cancellation controls.
- Use documented removal. The CleanMyMac and MacKeeper uninstall guide distinguishes versions and support components. Deleting the app does not cancel a subscription.
We did not initiate a trial, subscription or removal for this page. If you have an employer-managed installation, check with IT before changing its security or support tools.
Where Tend fits
Tend approaches the overlap through inspection and reviewed actions. Free includes current app CPU, memory and estimated watts, Space Map and cleanup inspection within your home folder. It does not provide an antivirus engine, VPN or MacKeeper’s support-chat service.
Pro adds selected eligible cleanup to Trash, the app uninstaller’s reviewed app and user-Library leftovers, file-review and privacy actions, maintenance tasks, longer energy periods and additional sensors. It does not remove every privileged shared component of complex software; use that vendor’s removal procedure.
Credentials, cloud storage and managed media libraries have protective boundaries. Files still need your judgment: protection against broad removal does not make every other item disposable. See Tend vs CleanMyMac for a more focused feature comparison and pricing for the complete Free/Pro split.
Questions
Is CleanMyMac better than MacKeeper?
It depends on the task. CleanMyMac emphasizes cleanup and app management; MacKeeper bundles antivirus, VPN and in-app support. This page does not claim a tested winner for detection, space recovered or performance.
Do I need either app to keep a Mac running well?
No general requirement applies. macOS Storage, app-specific controls and supported updates can be enough. Pay only for a documented feature or workflow you need.
Does uninstalling either app stop its subscription?
No. Use the billing provider that charged you, such as the vendor, Apple or Setapp. Confirm cancellation separately from local app removal.
